The "beautiful, troubled, helpless maiden"... Yeah right. Although appearing to be the
unfortunate damsel in distress, Vervena is far from the fair and gentle creature one would
expect her to be. She has escaped from her own country which was being taken over by the
round-ears, and is imposing upon the Duke's hospitality on the grounds of being his
father's cousin's mother's sister's nephew's daughter. However, unless she finds someone to
marry and bestow citizenship upon her, she will be deported back to her country. Now,
Vervena is a beautiful woman, and many would be willing to marry her, and you would
think a refugee wouldn't be too picky at this point. But no one rich enough or appealing
enough has offered yet, and she is running out of time.
This is the state in which we find her. With only a few days left, she meets unsuspecting
Timohut, the beautiful (if extremely glowy) soul of chivalry and gullibility... who also
happens to be very rich. Playing the role of the starry-eyed damsel, she easily bewitches
him into thinking he has at last found that one true love and proposes marriage immediately.
She accepts without hesitation, knowing that while he spills his riches and devotion at her
feet, she will keep the whip-hand over him and be able to stay in Alanda.
